1 or 2 suicides and I’d understand that these people were unwell to begin with. Possibly looking for an excuse outside of themselves to end their lives. But 12? Double digits indeed. This confuses me. I always thought Jackson’s music was life affirming, positive, hopeful, and triumphant in many ways. It got you up and got you going. But the root of these suicides may just be the definite loss of childhood, as Jackson no doubt to some represented a strong recollection of one’s youth. Simpler, innocent, and exciting times. I suppose there are many ways to understand suicide in any context. There’s also the celebrity angle. Where celebrity really has replaced the gods or the singular notion of God. I can imagine that if you invested so much of your waking life to the life of one celebrity or icon, then your own identity would be woven into this person for however long you identified with them.
All too perplexing for one blog post.
